Tales of the Dao

~ Broad Sword training Way ~

While the Dao has been the most celebrated of weapons in the Chinese Martial History it is also the most functional. One reason is that is easy to learn. More commonly used in Military history than the Jian - (long Sword) It was found Generals could recruit or possibly conscript soldiers into their ranks and have them using this weapon by the end of the first day of training. Then off they go to whatever the end result would be. Also it was also popular with the cavalry, not just infantry. The reasons for this will be covered in class as we go from a simple figure 8 movements, to learning a Yang Dao (knife) form for Internal Training.

Most of us are not going off to war, but this training is very practical and the principles can be used in any present day military setting or mic/mac venue..... More especially the principles and training methods are vital to our growth in the internal arts. Any weapon practice will help us with our strength training and focus. While the Spear (watch for upcoming Seminar!) is called the “King of Weapons” the Dao (which simply means ‘Knife’) is the work horse and is the most powerful and versatile. These weapons can vary greatly, but most all carry a similar number of characteristics which can be seen in most all modern day swords. (The dao goes back to the0 Shang dynasty, and was first made of Bronze, then of Iron entering into the warring states period)

Typically the weapon had a curved blade for thrusting, aided by a pointed tip with a backblade that is sharpened. The hilts will often curve in the opposite direction of the blade which improves circular power (Centrifugal force) and handling. The guard is often cupped to prevent the enemy's blood or rain from collecting on the grip. Most had a hardened metal butt/hilt used to strike. Lanyards were a choice and the weapon could easily be worn on the back (out of sight and out of the way) The Swords may also have tassels -- which the colors are said to have different meanings and they are said to be functional too.

Largest variations in Dao would be the Quandao or General Quan’s knife (we will be training this larger weapon in Tai Chi class) and I will bring one for attendees to see. There is also the Ba gua dao, (As tall as a man) and the Pudao -- with a long handle, while to former is more for training and will also be a part of our ba gua training way.
Please come and see why this weapon is the most revered of the Chinese Martial weapons and enjoy the seminar with the NGCF family and Friends. All attendees will be presented with their own Dao practice weapon, That we will immediately have you using this weapon in the first 5 minutes of the class, and you will also be able to take home for your continued practice .... Thank you for your ongoing interest and attendance! ........... Please register online for the second part of the series of two trainings.
