Each belt rank features kata (or pre-arranged forms) designed to teach movement and technique.  Each kata must be be mastered in order for student to advance to next belt rank.  Listed below is a description for each form including history, source, and purpose.  Information listed is as accurate as our source provides or in some cases provided.

  • History- (Heian Shodan) is a traditional Japanese Shotokan Kata
  • Source- This kata was taught by Donald & Brian Murnane of Massapoag Martial Arts
  • Purpose- Front Stance blocking & striking combinations emphasizing forward force

Yellow Belt- 8th Kyu

Heian Two (must have user permission)

  • History- (Heian Nidan) is a traditional Japanese Shotokan Kata
  • Source- This kata was taught by Donald & Brian Murnane of Massapoag Martial Arts
  • Purpose- Introduces kicking & teaches Back Stance techniques emphasizing hip twisting

Heian Three (must have user permission)

  • History- (Heian Sandan) is a traditional Japanese Shotokan Kata
  • Source- This kata was taught by Donald & Brian Murnane of Massapoag Martial Arts
  • Purpose- Teach Horse Stance Positions & spinning strikes

Purple Belt- 6th Kyu

Heian Four (must have user permission)

  • History- (Heian Yondan) is a traditional Japanese Shotokan Kata (many variations)
  • Source- This kata was taught by Donald & Brian Murnane of Massapoag Martial Arts
  • Purpose- Emphasizes chambering prior to executing techniques and various kicking techniques

Bo 1 (must have user permission)

  • History-
  • Source- This bo-staff kata was taught by Donald & Brian Murnane of Massapoag Martial Arts
  • Purpose- Teach basic striking and blocking of the bo staff

  • History- (Heian Godan) is a traditional Japanese Shotokan Kata (many variations)
  • Source- This kata was taught by Donald & Brian Murnane of Massapoag Martial Arts
  • Purpose- Emphasizes large movements including crescent kicks and a jumping technique

Bo 2 (must have user permission)

  • History- a traditional Okinawan/ Japanese bo form based on Kata Chion
  • Source- This bo kata was taught by Donald & Brian Murnane of Massapoag Martial Arts
  • Purpose- Teach basic handling of bo staff and hand position changes

Bassai Dai (must have user permission)

  • History- a traditional Japanese kata Shotokan Kata (many variations)
  • Source- This kata was taught by Donald & Brian Murnane of Massapoag Martial Arts
  • Purpose- Emphasizes varying degrees of power and speed with many direction changes

Combat Bo (must have user permission)

Tekki One (must have user permission)

  • History- (Naihanchi) is a traditional Japanese Shotokan Kata (many variations)
  • Source- This kata was taught by Donald & Brian Murnane of Massapaog Martial Arts
  • Purpose- Emphasizes proper use of hip rotation and twisting techniques from horse stances

Yonsu (must have user permission)

  • History- (Yantsu) is a traditional Okinawa Kata from Kyokushinkai, Naha-Te, and Goju-ryu 
  • Source- This kata was taught by Donald & Brian Murnane of Massapoag Martial Arts
  • Purpose- Emphasizes multiple striking and short strikes including open hand techniques

Shushi No Kun Sho (must have user permission)
